Colored Pencils

Colored pencils are made for paper. As you keep coloring on fabric, the tooth of the pencil wears down and it gets harder to lay down more color. Which pencils work best on fabric?  These are my favorites…

There are three types of colored pencils that I use on my doll faces:

  • Watercolor
  • Oil-based
  • Wax- based

For my first layer of color on the face, I use either oil or wax-based colored pencil, and afterward, I use watercolor to blend and add lots of shading and depth.  I prefer oil over wax, and I explain why on my blog.  These are the brands that I love:

Watercolor – Lyra Aquarell

Oil – Faber Castell Polychromos or Lyra Polycolor.  Caran D’ache Pablo is another fine choice.

Wax – Prismacolor Premier or Caran d’Ache Luminance
